Who Is A Periodontist?
Periodontics is a recognized specialty of dentistry that deals with the diagnosis, treatment, and preservation of those diseases that affect the gum tissue and underlying bone. Periodontists are experts in the management of these complex dental problems as well as in the placement of dental implants.
To become educationally qualified as a periodontist, you must have an undergraduate degree (4 + years of training), a DDS or DMD degree from an accredited dental school (4 years of training), and a Certificate in Periodontics from a residency program (3 years of training). In other words, periodontists undergo a minimum of 11 years of training before they are fully licensed to practice periodontics.
Who should see a Periodontist?
As more and more patients are exhibiting signs of periodontal disease, coupled with research that suggests a relationship between periodontal disease and other chronic diseases of aging, periodontal treatment may necessitate a greater understanding and increased level of expertise by a trained specialist. Patients who present with moderate or severe levels of periodontal disease or patients with more complex cases will be best managed by a partnership between the dentist and the periodontist.
